I’m running for Solace Women’s Aid
If you read about what they do you’ll want to support them too:
Solace Womens Aid is an
innovative charity focused on supporting women and children in London affected
by domestic and sexual violence. Solace provides refuge accommodation and
community based services to over 10,000 women and children a year, offering a holistic
package of support addressing the practical and emotional needs of survivors.
Their services also include advice, counselling, legal representation,
dedicated children and young peoples services and advocacy support for
survivors of rape, child sexual abuse and sexual assault. Domestic and sexual
violence affects the health and well-being of women and children in the
immediate and long term future as they face daily risks to escape the abuse.
Two women are killed a week in the UK by a partner or former partner and
thousands endure constant psychological abuse and regular physical assaults
resulting in injury and poor mental health. Solace supports women and children
to keep them safe and help their short and long term recovery. London has
higher rates of domestic violence than the average for England and Wales and
Solace’s refuge services are full to capacity. The services they provide are a
lifeline for thousands of women and children and they provide life changing
support. According to one survivor of violence who Solace supported last year: “Your
bruises go away and your bones mend. But its the effect on your head, it’s the
despair, being hopeless. It’s a very dark place to be. But Solace has given me
hope.”
